Second Harvest Food Bank - Thanks to the support of the United Fund of Cumberland County, there have been 977,043 pounds of food distributed by Second Harvest in Cumberland County in the last year. That is the equivalent of over 757,500 meals provided for those at risk of going hungry. A large amount of the United Fund support goes to support children in need. From the child who scrounges through cafeteria trash cans for leftover food, to the family who stands in line at a soup kitchen waiting for a nutritious meal, every person needs and deserves daily food that will promote good health, energy, and productivity. Sadly, the USDA reports a 3-year record-high trend for children at risk of hunger, tracked over the last 16 years. Yearly teacher surveys indicate that at-risk children who receive supplemental food are positively impacted in social behavior, classroom attendance and attention, grades, and overall health. All of these factors impact a child’s ability to succeed in school, gain meaningful employment, and become a productive adult member of society.
TAD Center – The monies received from the United Fund are of great importance to the TAD Center. This money is used to help provide our free after-school program. The after-school program is available four days each week FREE of charge (thanks to United Fund ) and includes a snack, supervised activities, arts and crafts, gym games and even homework help. This program has been at no cost to the area students thanks to programs like UF since our inception in 1987. We feel keeping it free enables the lower income families to participate…something they may not be able to do if a fee were charged.
The TAD Center is a comprehensive community education program providing school based drug, alcohol and suicide prevention as well as lessons on internet safety and non violent dating relationships. The center also offers the after-school and summer program and houses a counseling center.

“One year, a Head Start family with a little boy enrolled at our center needed dental work done badly. The parent had been denied TennCare 6 months before. The little boy would come into school and almost every week, at least 1-2 days per week, we would have to call the parent to come and get him because he would be in so much pain. After talking to the parent in depth, the Child had Dental Surgery and no more pain. United Fund money was used to help pay for these services. With United Fund money, the child’s pain was reduced sooner by receiving dental services sooner.”
