What is the difference between the United Fund and United Way?

The United Fund of Cumberland County operates much like United Way, with the exception that we are local and we pay no membership dues.

What is the operating expense of the United Fund?

The operating budget is 13% of the total budget of the United Fund consisting of one part-time employee, a volunteer board of 16 members and 100's of other volunteers like yourself that help with special projects and events.

I noticed some of the partner agencies listed are physically located out of the county.  How does my money stay local to here in Cumberland County?

Even though a few agencies are physically located out of the county, the funding given goes towards programs they provide for people in  Cumberland County.

What is the process for determining who receives funding?

Non-profit agencies apply each year by completing a grant application that includes information about what they are requesting funding for and how they plan to address one of the critical needs in our community.  Included with their application is an audited or approved financial statement, contingency plan, statement of purpose, proof of 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, fundraising activities and a Partner Agreement.  Agency review teams (composed of people from the companies that support the United Fund and other community members) review and score the applications and conduct an on-site visit to the agency facility.  The financial documentation is reviewed by the United Fund Finance Committee.  Recommendations are made by the Allocation Committee and voted on by the Board of Directors.
